Everton’s new owners are reportedly considering former captain David Weir, currently Brighton’s technical director, as a leading candidate to replace Kevin Thelwell as director of football.

TFG took charge of Everton in December after months of negotiations, and fans are hopeful they can restore the club to its former standing.

The new ownership has already made a significant decision at Goodison Park by reappointing David Moyes for a second stint as manager.

This move came after Sean Dyche informed The Friedkin Group that he had taken Everton as far as he could.

While TFG was reluctant to part ways with Dyche, they ultimately had no alternative.

Another major decision on TFG’s agenda is the director of football role, with Kevin Thelwell’s future at the club uncertain.

A fresh claim has now emerged regarding a potential successor.

The Friedkin Group Considering David Weir for Director of Football

Ahead of the Merseyside Derby against Liverpool, reports suggest that The Friedkin Group has identified former Everton defender David Weir as a prime candidate for the director of football position.

Weir is currently in the same role at Brighton, having taken over from Dan Ashworth in 2022. Before that, he served as their loans manager.

Notably, Weir captained Everton under Moyes during his first tenure as manager, making him a familiar figure at the club.

This development casts doubt over Kevin Thelwell’s future, as his fixed-term contract with Everton is set to expire at the end of the season.

So far, there has been no official statement from TFG regarding his status.

Last month, The Esk also suggested that Weir was in contention for the role at Everton.

Everton Expected to Replace Kevin Thelwell

Last week, Everton News reported that Kevin Thelwell is likely to be replaced as director of football.

Graeme Bailey commented: “He has had to navigate some difficult circumstances, and The Friedkin Group acknowledges that.

However, they are exploring other options, and the expectation is that there will be a change in that department.”

With TFG actively considering a new direction, Weir’s potential return to Goodison Park could mark another major shift in the club’s hierarchy.
