Sky Sports transfer correspondent Dharmesh Sheth reported on 31 July that West Ham are closing in on an agreement for the German international Niclas Fullkrug, with the structure of the deal now being finalized.
Personal terms are not yet fully agreed upon, but optimism is growing that a transfer can be secured.
West Ham go back in for Fullkrug
Although West Ham’s transfer targets have shifted since Tim Steidten took charge of recruitment, Fullkrug was a target last season too, according to Sheth.
The 31-year-old spent last season at Borussia Dortmund after a successful spell with Werder Bremen, where he averaged a goal every two Bundesliga games.
Fullkrug netted 12 goals in 29 league matches for Dortmund and has scored 13 in 21 senior Germany caps, demonstrating the credentials of a “late bloomer” who could offer some of the best years of his career to West Ham.
Steidten has not yet been entirely successful in the club’s pursuit of a striker to complement Michail Antonio and Danny Ings, with three bids turned down for Aston Villa youngster Jhon Duran and an apparently failed chase of Villarreal frontman Alexander Sorloth.
Fullkrug would provide an exciting and direct dynamic to Julen Lopetegui’s system, and there is a keen interest in seeing how he would perform in claret and blue.
