Lopetegui provides Fullkrug update ahead of Fulham clash, with another West Ham star returning from injury
In the pre-Fulham press conference on 12 September, West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui confirmed that goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is fit, while describing Niclas Fullkrug’s injury as “a pity.”
Fullkrug, West Ham’s new signing, picked up a potential Achilles injury while on international duty with Germany.
Areola, the French goalkeeper, was substituted at half-time during the Manchester City match due to injury concerns.
Speaking about Fullkrug’s condition, Lopetegui said: “He has a bit of a problem, which is a pity, but we’ll know more later today. I think we’ll make the final decision tomorrow.”
Regarding Areola, the manager reassured: “He’s OK. He’s recovered well.”
Can West Ham beat Fulham? Despite an inconsistent start on paper, West Ham has performed well this season.
Their losses came against Premier League champions Manchester City, with Erling Haaland in top form, and Aston Villa, where linked forward Jhon Duran redeemed himself after a summer social media controversy involving West Ham.
The Hammers’ only win so far was an away victory at Crystal Palace, a notoriously difficult venue, marking a positive result.
A win against Fulham would further boost West Ham’s confidence and improve their chances in the European competition chase.
With Areola fit and Fullkrug likely to miss the match, Lopetegui may turn to either Danny Ings or Michail Antonio to lead the attack.
Antonio, fresh off a goal for Jamaica during international duty, could be a key player against Fulham’s defense.
