Leicester City youngster Louis Page earns England Under-17 World Cup call-up and could miss several Championship matches next month
Marti Cifuentes says he would be more than happy to see Louis Page unavailable for a month — if it means the young Leicester City midfielder is representing England in a World Cup final.
Page has been selected for England’s Under-17 squad ahead of next month’s World Cup in Qatar.
The Young Lions will hope to emulate the success of the 2017 team that featured Phil Foden, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Marc Guehi.
As part of the 21-man squad, Page could miss up to a month of club football. England open their group campaign on Tuesday, November 4, with the final scheduled for Thursday, November 27.
If England go all the way, Page would likely miss six Leicester fixtures — starting with Blackburn at home on November 1 and ending with Sheffield United on November 29, just two days after the final.
Cifuentes welcomed the news, saying: “It’s fantastic. He’s done really well every time he’s been with England.
I have a lot of belief in him, and this is a great opportunity for him to gain valuable experience.
Playing in a World Cup is something special. Even if it means losing him for a month, it would be worth it if England reach the final. I’m happy for him — he’s developing well and has a big future at the club.”
The expanded 48-team tournament means England must navigate group games against Venezuela, Haiti, and Egypt before facing five knockout rounds to win the trophy.
Page, 17, made three senior appearances for Leicester in August, providing an assist for Abdul Fatawu against Birmingham.
Since then, he has been featuring regularly for the club’s Under-21 side as he continues his development.
