The New York Mets are on the verge of securing a minor league deal with first baseman/DH Luke Voit, aiming to add a powerful depth piece to their position player lineup, as reported by The New York Post’s Joel Sherman. Discussions between the Mets and Voit were initially revealed by SNY insider Andy Martino. Voit previously played a portion of the last season with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, impressing with a 1.058 OPS, 14 home runs, and 35 RBIs in just 37 games. Despite this, the Mets did not promote him to the majors, leading Voit to opt out of his minor league deal in August.
Voit concluded the 2023 season with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he struggled with a .549 OPS, zero homers, and four RBIs in 22 games. Despite these challenges, the 33-year-old has demonstrated his hitting prowess, particularly during his standout years with the Yankees from 2018 to 2020. In that period, he became a consistent presence in the Yankees’ lineup as the everyday first baseman, leading the majors in homers in 2020 and securing a ninth-place finish in the AL MVP race during the Covid-shortened season.
However, injuries and a decline in performance led to Voit falling out of favor with the Yankees, eventually replaced by Anthony Rizzo in 2021. The Mets are now poised to give Voit a chance to revive his career at the big-league level, with his potent bat potentially serving as a valuable addition, especially at the designated hitter position, should other options like Mark Vientos face early struggles. The outcome remains uncertain, but Voit’s history of offensive impact suggests the potential for a compelling contribution to the Mets’ lineup.
