A summer move away from Newcastle United was nearly sealed for Will Osula.
Newcastle United forward Will Osula has reportedly reached an agreement to depart St James’ Park in the upcoming January transfer window.
The 22-year-old came extremely close to leaving on deadline day in the summer, when both Aston Villa and Eintracht Frankfurt made formal approaches to sign him.
Villa initially appeared the most likely destination, but restrictions imposed by UEFA’s financial regulations ultimately blocked their ability to complete a deal.
With that option gone, Osula seemed on course to join Frankfurt for a fee in the region of £30 million.
However, talks collapsed late on when the German side switched their proposal to a season-long loan that included an option to buy, a structure Newcastle were unwilling to accept.
Will Osula agrees personal terms with Eintracht Frankfurt
Looking back on the failed summer transfer, manager Eddie Howe admitted it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Just one week after arriving from Brentford in a £55 million move, striker Yoane Wissa suffered a knee injury, leaving Osula’s presence in the squad even more crucial.
Despite carrying an ankle problem of his own, Osula pushed through and shared attacking duties with Nick Woltemade.
Unfortunately, that injury has since worsened, and the young Dane has now missed seven consecutive matches.
With Wissa having returned to fitness, Newcastle are again open to the possibility of Osula leaving in January.
Frankfurt have maintained their interest throughout, and according to German outlet Bild, they have already reached an agreement with the player regarding personal terms.
Reports claim Osula has accepted a five-year deal that would see him earn a salary package worth around €2.5 million (£2.1 million).
Eddie Howe reflects on Osula’s near-departure
Discussing how close Osula came to leaving a few months ago, Howe said: “It was very close that he could have gone in a number of ways.
A loan was always our preferred option because we wanted Will to play regularly.
His development last year was excellent, even though he accepted limited match minutes in exchange for intense training and detailed performance analysis with Graeme Jones.
“The natural next step was for him to get consistent game time, especially after we signed two new forwards.
That felt like the best way for him to continue progressing on the pitch.
But the move didn’t happen, and in hindsight we were relieved, especially after Yoane got injured. Will is hugely important to us. We really believe in what he brings.”
Howe added that Osula’s pace, athleticism and growing tactical maturity have turned him into a far more complete striker: “You could see his speed the other day.
Alongside that, his understanding of how to manage different phases of a match has really improved.”
Newcastle provide injury update on Osula
A significant factor influencing any January move is Osula’s current ankle injury. His recovery timeline remains unclear.
Howe explained recently: “We need further internal discussions to properly assess what’s happening with his ankle.
Progress hasn’t been straightforward, and he’s still not feeling right. I’ll give an update when we know more.”
