David Moyes has worked wonders with the Everton side he took over earlier this year from Sean Dyche.

When the experienced Scot returned to Goodison Park, many feared the Toffees were set for another nerve-wracking scrap for Premier League survival, one that might last until the final matchdays of the campaign.

While the shortcomings of the league’s bottom three have certainly played a role in helping some clubs avoid the drop, Everton’s safety has been secured on their own merit, thanks to improved performances under Moyes.

The 62-year-old has admitted he had initial concerns about the threat of relegating a club so close to his heart.

However, those fears were soon alleviated by the team’s strong early showings under his guidance.

This survival, though, is only the beginning. With the Friedkin Group now in place and seemingly ready to invest, Everton are preparing for a summer of change, and Moyes is eager to reshape the squad in his image.

Despite the significant progress, Moyes has been quick to downplay any celebration over merely staying up.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola even acknowledged Everton’s threat—especially from set-pieces—after their recent match, highlighting how far the club has come. But Moyes is not satisfied with just being difficult to beat.

Speaking to the media, Moyes made it clear that he expects more from the club moving forward. “I have to say, the players have done a terrific job,” he said.

“They got the job done early and put us in a decent position that we want to improve on. But we shouldn’t be celebrating survival—that’s not good enough. We must aim much higher.”

He’s already pinpointed four critical positions to strengthen during the upcoming transfer window.

Moyes has his eyes firmly set on returning Everton to the heights they reached during his successful first stint at the club, rather than letting them linger as perennial relegation battlers.

In contrast, Frank Lampard famously celebrated Everton’s survival in 2022 with great emotion, embracing the chaos as fans flooded the Goodison Park pitch.

While the circumstances were different—survival wasn’t guaranteed until the very end—Moyes wants that kind of situation to be a thing of the past.

Looking ahead, Moyes has made it clear to the Friedkins that financial backing will be crucial to avoid a repeat of recent seasons.

He has already begun discussions about the summer, though he acknowledged the uncertainty around spending limits.

“We’ve had some talks already, but things keep evolving,” Moyes said from Finch Farm. “We’ve got to make sure we fully understand our PSR [Profit and Sustainability Rules] situation.

We also need to see how deep the owners’ pockets are. Hopefully, they’re deep enough to allow us to strengthen the squad significantly.”
