Radu Dragusin, Tottenham’s recent acquisition, turned down an alternative club offer, along with Bayern Munich, to finalize his transfer to Spurs in January.
Aurelio De Laurentiis, the chairman of Napoli, confirmed that his club made a late attempt to acquire the center-back, but their efforts were unsuccessful, just like Bayern’s bid to hijack Spurs’ move.
Previously, Genoa, Dragusin’s former club, had claimed that Bayern offered a more lucrative financial package compared to Spurs. However, De Laurentiis revealed that Napoli presented an even more substantial deal.
“I had offered him more than anyone: no one had given him the figures that we would have guaranteed him,” De Laurentiis stated, as reported by Area Napoli.
“Genoa replied to me: ‘Bayern Munich are also there, but the boy really wants England’. It wasn’t a question of money, because it doesn’t always go like this when you try to sign a footballer.
“If they tell you that the talent you want to hire is seen elsewhere, aspires to certain leagues, you can’t help but stop. We did our bit, but his choice was different.”
Despite the attempts by Napoli and Bayern, Spurs successfully secured Dragusin’s services in a deal worth £26.7 million, leaving both opposing clubs unsuccessful in their pursuits.
