Neal Maupay has seemingly reignited his feud with James Maddison, with the Brentford star appearing to mock the Tottenham player’s omission from the England squad for the Euros.
The clash between Spurs and Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in February was emotionally charged, featuring numerous tackles and altercations. Maupay incited the Tottenham players by using James Maddison’s signature darts celebration after giving Brentford the lead in the first half. In response, Brennan Johnson mocked Maupay when Spurs turned the game around early in the second half.
The tensions continued after the final whistle, with Maddison telling TNT Sports (via BBC Sport) that Maupay was copying his celebration because the Brentford striker had not scored enough goals to create his own. Maupay retorted on social media, pointing out on Instagram that he has more career goals and fewer relegations than the Tottenham midfielder.
Earlier this week, Maddison received the heartbreaking news that he had been left out of the final 26-man England squad traveling to Germany for the Euros. The former Leicester man expressed his disappointment on social media but insisted he would take it on the chin and fully support his international teammates this summer.
Maupay has now seemingly mocked Maddison again by posting a picture of himself in front of a dartboard on social media.
While the initial war of words between Maupay and Maddison showed the players’ competitive spirit, Maupay’s continued jabs four months later seem unnecessary. Mocking a fellow professional during one of the lowest moments of his career does not reflect well on the Frenchman.
