Newcastle United Focus on Anthony Elanga as Summer Transfer Plans Take Shape

Newcastle United were presented with the opportunity to sign Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi this summer at a discounted price.

Despite the 22-year-old’s youth, international pedigree, and Club World Cup exposure, the club ultimately rejected the deal after conducting background checks, judging it unsuitable.

Instead, Newcastle have maintained a firm focus on Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga as their top right-sided target.

Talks are progressing, and although no agreement has been finalised, the Magpies are confident of concluding the deal by the weekend.

The transfer fee is expected to reach close to £60 million with add-ons, slightly above the initially reported £55 million.

Should the move go through, Elanga will become the club’s second most expensive signing, marking a major endorsement of Eddie Howe’s transfer strategy and the first significant first-team addition in three windows.

Newcastle’s summer has seen its fair share of frustrations. High-priority targets such as Liam Delap, Dean Huijsen, Bryan Mbeumo, and Joao Pedro all opted for moves elsewhere—Delap chose Chelsea, Huijsen was swayed by Real Madrid, Mbeumo’s wage demands were too high, and Pedro preferred a move to London.

The club have now shifted their defensive focus to continental options instead of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Aside from Elanga, Newcastle are also pushing to finalise a deal for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Contrary to online speculation, negotiations are not being stalled by sell-on clauses but rather the finer details of the agreements.

Talks with Burnley nearly reached completion last week before the Clarets increased their demands.

Despite this, both Trafford and Elanga are eager to join, and Newcastle expect both deals to be wrapped up soon.

In the background, the club’s recruitment team, led by Andy Howe, are working on two additional deals. One potential target is Italian centre-back Giorgio Scalvini.

Although the Atalanta defender is highly rated, concerns have been raised internally about his injury record.

Nevertheless, Newcastle remain interested, especially if the fee is as favourable as reported.
