January Set to Decide Fabian Schar’s Fate as His Contract Runs Down
Former Manchester United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown — a highly respected figure with deep connections throughout football — has suggested that Fabian Schar could be allowed to leave Newcastle United, despite recent conversations about a potential contract extension.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Brown explained that the 33-year-old defender may be nearing the end of his spell at St James’ Park, particularly as the club quietly prepares for defensive changes.
Football Insider previously revealed that Newcastle had opened discussions with Schar in an attempt to prolong his stay.
However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season and clubs from the Bundesliga circling, there is a growing internal belief that the upcoming January transfer window may be the right moment to make a decisive call.
Allowing Schar to move on could give Eddie Howe the opportunity to reshape his back line with a younger, long-term pairing.
Newcastle strengthened their defence in the summer with the arrival of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, while Sven Botman has shown clear signs of rediscovering his top form.
Those two are increasingly viewed as the backbone of Howe’s defensive plan for the future.
As a result, Schar may find his role diminishing, particularly as age begins to catch up with several senior defenders at the club.
Brown, who played a crucial role in player recruitment during Manchester United’s most successful era, believes that the club wants clarity on Schar’s situation before the mid-season window closes.
“Newcastle could let Schar leave, yes,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s one of a few players in that defence who might be entering the part of their career where performances start to dip.
Dan Burn is into his 30s now, and so is Kieran Trippier, so a rebuild might be necessary.
“If German clubs or other teams are interested, it could be beneficial for everyone if Schar is allowed to move on and play regular football elsewhere.
Newcastle brought in Thiaw, and Botman is still a key figure, so those two are most likely their preferred pairing moving forward.
That naturally opens the door for someone like Schar to step aside and gives Newcastle a chance to find a younger option who fits their long-term ambitions.
“They must decide whether Schar can still contribute at a high level or whether he’s past his peak.
It’s a judgment that needs to be made in January so the club has a clear direction, rather than waiting until his contract expires in the summer.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s broader contract strategy continues to gather pace.
Football Insider reported on 26 October that sporting director Ross Wilson is pushing forward with negotiations to secure new deals for several key members of the squad.
Although Schar’s future remains uncertain, other crucial players are expected to receive extensions as Eddie Howe is determined to keep his core group intact.
Sandro Tonali has already committed to fresh terms, and the club is preparing for talks with Bruno Guimaraes to further solidify their midfield.
Additionally, as reported on 14 September, Newcastle are planning to offer Tino Livramento a new deal to fend off growing interest from rival clubs.
Livramento is believed to be open to remaining on Tyneside, eager to continue the impressive development he has shown since joining the Magpies.
