Losing Joelinton for what appears to be the remainder of the season is a significant setback for Newcastle United.

The Brazilian midfielder has been a powerful presence in the middle of the park, especially in high-stakes matches—and with four major fixtures left in the battle for Champions League qualification, his absence couldn’t come at a worse time.

However, while Joelinton’s injury is undoubtedly a blow, it presents a chance for others to step up.

Newcastle still boasts a solid pool of midfielders with Joe Willock, Lewis Miley, and Sean Longstaff all available to fill the gap.

If anyone has demonstrated the value of seizing opportunities lately, it’s Harvey Barnes.

His recent performances have earned him recognition, and it’s part of the reason last season’s standout, Anthony Gordon, has been forced to settle for a spot on the bench since returning earlier this month.

Returning to midfield selection, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are the clear picks to anchor the team, but that leaves one spot open.

The big question is: who should claim it—Willock, Miley, or Longstaff—particularly with Brighton and other key fixtures on the horizon?

Willock started in Joelinton’s place during the 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town last weekend. Given that he prefers operating on the left side of a midfield three, much like Joelinton, he’s likely to retain his role when Newcastle travels to face Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

On paper, it’s the most straightforward, like-for-like switch Eddie Howe can make.

That said, I’d personally love to see more of Lewis Miley.

Miley, who turns 19 today, made waves last season by becoming the youngest player to represent Newcastle in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

He broke into the first team as a 17-year-old and quickly earned acclaim across the country for his composure and technical ability.

This season, however, has been frustrating for the Stanley-born talent.

After suffering a back injury followed by a broken metatarsal, he spent seven months sidelined, only returning to action in October.

Given the form and chemistry between Tonali, Bruno, and Joelinton—one of the Premier League’s strongest midfield combinations—Miley’s limited minutes are understandable. Still, his stats are promising: two goals in just four starts.

Eddie Howe is clearly a big admirer. In February, he said of Miley: “He can be anything he wants to be, the bar is high for him.”

And when rumors emerged that Miley might leave for more game time, Howe dismissed them immediately. “Lewis is absolutely pivotal to our future. He’s going nowhere.”

While Willock has featured regularly this season, the ongoing debate over who should replace Joelinton suggests he hasn’t completely made the position his own.

Longstaff, meanwhile, has barely featured since December.

With Howe expressing such faith in Miley, now feels like the right moment to give him a bigger role.
