Newcastle United Eye Defensive Reinforcement with Van Hecke Move

Newcastle United are aiming to build a squad capable of challenging for a top-four Premier League finish in the 2025/26 season, with Champions League football once again on the horizon.

As part of their summer rebuild, centre-back appears to be a priority position for manager Eddie Howe.

While the Magpies have long been linked with England international Marc Guehi, Football Insider reports that Arsenal are also vying for his signature.

Regardless, Newcastle are determined to bolster their defensive line, which currently includes Dan Burn and Fabian Schär.

Now, a new name has emerged on the club’s radar—Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jan Paul van Hecke.

According to 3 Added Minutes, Newcastle have opened talks with the Dutch defender’s representatives about a possible summer transfer.

The 25-year-old has also attracted interest from Liverpool, and Brighton are reportedly valuing him at a minimum of £60 million, per Sussex World.

Van Hecke enjoyed a standout 2024/25 campaign at Brighton, making 34 Premier League appearances and helping the team secure eight clean sheets.

A full Netherlands international, he contributed both a goal and an assist during the season and was a mainstay in Fabian Hürzeler’s backline, missing just three games through minor injuries and suspension.

With Dan Burn now 33, Newcastle are exploring long-term upgrades. Burn, who also arrived from Brighton, remains a beloved figure at St James’ Park and featured in 37 league games last season, including a crucial goal in the Carabao Cup final.

However, Van Hecke presents a more dynamic and future-proof option.

Statistically, Van Hecke is a clear upgrade. According to FBref, he averaged 6.93 progressive passes and 3.98 ball recoveries per 90 minutes last season, compared to Burn’s 2.03 and 2.78 respectively.

Known for his ball-playing ability and defensive intelligence, Van Hecke has been described as “outstanding” by Newcastle content creator Pete Davey.

In pursuit of defensive solidity and European success, Newcastle may find Van Hecke’s profile too valuable to ignore.
