Newcastle United’s season continues to be disrupted by a growing list of injuries that has stretched Eddie Howe’s squad and forced the club to rethink its medical setup.

Record summer signing Yoane Wissa, who arrived from Brentford for £55million, has yet to make his debut after sustaining a knee injury shortly after joining.

Three months on, the forward is still working his way back to full fitness.

William Osula is another long-term absentee, with the young striker sidelined due to an ankle problem, while Kieran Trippier is currently unavailable after picking up a hamstring issue.

There is further uncertainty surrounding Emil Krafth. Although the Swedish defender travelled to France for Newcastle’s 2-1 loss to Marseille in the Champions League, he was not named in the matchday squad and has now missed the last two fixtures.

Howe later confirmed that Krafth has suffered another setback, leaving the manager worryingly short of options at full-back.

Fortunately, Tino Livramento, Jacob Ramsey and Lewis Hall — all of whom have had injury spells this season — have returned and are once again in contention.

Given the recurring fitness issues, Newcastle are moving to strengthen their medical department.

The club has posted an advert for a new assistant first-team doctor, with the aim of enhancing the “world-class” support available to players.

The successful candidate will work closely with head of medicine Dr Paul Catterson, alongside physiotherapists, rehab specialists and academy medical staff.

Responsibilities include matchday emergency support, injury assessment and treatment, and aiding the development of best practice protocols to ensure optimal player welfare.

With a demanding festive schedule approaching, Newcastle are desperate to avoid further injuries.

As it stands, at least four first-team players remain sidelined without confirmed return dates. Speaking ahead of the Marseille fixture, Howe outlined the situation: “Emil Krafth has travelled with us.

Kieran Trippier hasn’t, and that’s the main team news.” Since then, Krafth’s availability has worsened, intensifying concerns over squad depth.

Howe emphasised the importance of balancing immediate needs with long-term fitness management when discussing Livramento and Hall. “I have to consult the medical and sports science teams to make the right calls,” he said.

“Both players are vital for us, as we saw against Manchester City, and ensuring their long-term fitness is crucial.

With Kieran’s injury, we’re still unsure how long he’ll be out, and that leaves us thin at full-back.”

Meanwhile, Osula visited a specialist earlier in the week to assess his ankle issue.

The striker has now missed four straight matches across all competitions and has not yet returned to full training.

Wissa, on the other hand, is edging closer to rejoining the main group, though he still hasn’t taken part in a full session since arriving on Tyneside.
