Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has insisted he has no plans to walk away from St James’ Park, even after hearing sections of the crowd voice their frustration during the weekend defeat to Brentford.

The Magpies boss, who received public backing from chief executive David Hopkinson last week, is also believed to have been reassured internally by the club’s ownership and sporting director Ross Wilson over the past few days.

Despite the outside noise, Howe has made it clear that the greatest pressure he feels comes from within.

He views the current dip in form as a test of character — the first genuinely difficult spell he has faced since taking charge — and believes it will ultimately make him stronger.

Speaking at his press conference, Howe underlined just how deeply he cares about his role and the club itself.

“I care hugely about what I do and I care even more about this football club,” he said. “For me, the club will always come first — not me, not any individual player — the club and everything it represents is what matters most.

“The players are a massive part of that, of course. But every decision I make is with the club’s best interests at heart, whether it concerns myself or anyone else.

When you think that way and focus on the bigger picture, outside pressure becomes less significant. The only pressure that truly matters is the one I put on myself.

“I’m honest enough to admit that I need to improve, and I will improve. These moments are part of growth.

Challenging periods help you evolve, and often you learn the most during adversity. I’m looking forward to responding in the right way.”

When asked directly whether he had questioned his suitability for the job, Howe was unequivocal.

“There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind,” he stated. “If I had any uncertainty about being the right person to lead this team forward, I wouldn’t be sitting here now.

The club is bigger than any individual, and I would never put myself ahead of it.

“My motivation and desire are as strong as ever. I’ll give everything, every single day, to move this team forward.

If I ever felt I couldn’t give the players what they need or take the club where it wants to go, I would step aside. But that’s not how I feel.”

With Newcastle currently 12th in the Premier League table and preparing to face a struggling Tottenham side, Howe acknowledged that strong leadership is essential.

“In moments like this, your qualities really have to shine because everyone looks to you to set the example,” he explained.

“People naturally want direction and belief. If you show strength and conviction, you can bring others with you. This is when you stand up and demonstrate character.

“That’s what we’ll aim to do — myself and the staff. We have a very committed group of players.

They’re honest, they care deeply, and there are no issues with their attitude. The key now is raising the standard of our performances and delivering better quality on the pitch.”
