Ahead of the January transfer window, Newcastle United were widely tipped to steal a march on several European rivals in the race to secure one of the continent’s most highly rated young talents.
Kees Smit continues to draw significant attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Newcastle United previously expected to push hard for a January move in order to secure his signature early and avoid an intense bidding war in the summer transfer window.
However, AZ Alkmaar and the player are fully aware of the growing interest surrounding the highly rated midfielder.
As a result, both parties appear determined to delay any major decision until the end of the season, believing that waiting will strengthen their position and potentially increase competition for his services.
That stance has effectively disrupted Newcastle’s plans.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that the Magpies did make serious attempts to open negotiations with AZ Alkmaar, but their efforts have so far been unsuccessful.
Newcastle pushed hard for a January deal
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that Newcastle repeatedly tried to convince AZ Alkmaar to sanction a January transfer.
Despite those efforts, he suggested that a winter move is now extremely unlikely, forcing the Premier League side to shift their focus to the summer instead.
“My understanding is that, once again in January, the intention is not to move the player,” Romano explained. “So a transfer this month is really unlikely, even though Newcastle tried many times to sign Kees Smit. At this point, the deal looks very difficult.
“But in the summer, a big battle is coming. Real Madrid are monitoring the player, and several top Premier League clubs are also watching him closely. It’s going to be a serious fight for Kees Smit.”
Newcastle still remain in contention
While it was already expected that a January transfer was improbable, Romano’s update further underlines that Smit is unlikely to leave AZ Alkmaar before the season concludes.
With giants such as Real Madrid circling, Newcastle face stiff competition.
Still, the groundwork already laid could work in their favour, helping to convince Smit that St James’ Park offers him a clear pathway, long-term vision and a promising future at the highest level.
