Six weeks ago, Newcastle United’s Sporting Director, Ross Wilson, spoke about contract situations involving key players.

On arriving from Nottingham Forest, Wilson was pleasantly surprised to discover that Sandro Tonali’s contract, initially thought to run until June 2028, actually extends until June 2029, with an additional season Newcastle can trigger—effectively tying him to the club for another four and a half years.

In early December 2025, Wilson also confirmed that talks were ongoing with two other important players, Tino Livramento and Sven Botman, about extending their deals.

At that time, Botman had just over a year and a half left on his contract, and Livramento just over two and a half years.

Wilson noted that while some negotiations were more challenging than others, the club’s aim was to retain these players, though outcomes remained uncertain.

Six days ago, on 12 January, Sven Botman committed to a new long-term deal, extending his contract from June 2027 to June 2030.

Head Coach Eddie Howe praised Botman’s professionalism, mentality, and contributions on and off the pitch, welcoming the security his long-term future brings.

Attention now turns to Livramento, whose extension would further strengthen Newcastle’s young defensive core.

Despite past injuries and occasional dips in form, the club has a promising backline: Lewis Hall (21) with three and a half years left, Malick Thiaw (24) with three and a half years, Sven Botman (26) with four and a half years, and Livramento (23) with two and a half years.

Adding two or three years to Livramento’s deal would set Newcastle up with a high-quality defence for years to come.

Current contract expirations at the club are as follows:

June 2026: Schar, Targett, Ashby, Trippier, Krafth, Lascelles, Ramsdale

June 2027: Pope, Burn, Jacob Murphy, Willock

June 2028: Barnes, Livramento, Bruno, Miley, Joelinton, Alex Murphy

June 2029: Hall, Vlachodios, Gordon, Wissa, Thiaw, Tonali (effectively 2030 with trigger)

With these extensions, Newcastle are positioning themselves for a stable and competitive squad in the coming years.
