Newcastle United emerged as early contenders for Antoine Semenyo in the summer window.
Premier League sides are on high alert following the revelation that Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo has a £65million release clause written into his contract.
According to a report from The Athletic earlier this week, the in-form winger — who has already recorded nine Premier League goal contributions this season — is eligible to leave during the first two weeks of the January window.
Newcastle United were among the clubs monitoring his situation throughout the summer.
In the end, Newcastle opted to push ahead with a deal for Anthony Elanga, but the former Manchester United forward has struggled to make the desired impact, failing to produce a goal or assist in 17 appearances across all competitions so far.
The Magpies do, however, have strong depth on the flanks, with Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy all competing for minutes in wide positions.
Could Newcastle make a move for Semenyo?
From a financial perspective, the £65million clause would not stretch Newcastle’s resources.
The club’s budget remains strong, especially following the record-breaking sale of Alexander Isak, which injected significant funds into their transfer coffers.
Despite this, the prospect of landing Semenyo appeared far more realistic during the summer window.
His superb form in the Premier League has since caught the attention of several elite clubs, including Liverpool and Arsenal, making the competition for his signature even more intense.
Newcastle’s existing options out wide also reduce the urgency for a marquee winger signing, with Eddie Howe choosing to remain patient with Elanga as he adapts to his new surroundings.
Semenyo’s stance — and his admiration for Arsenal
The Ghana international has already made his personal footballing allegiances clear, offering a potential advantage to the current league leaders. Speaking last year, Semenyo admitted: “I am an Arsenal fan.
I don’t conflict the two with my job. It’s great to play against Arsenal, a team I’ve watched all my life, and I want to play for top clubs as well. For that to happen, I need to prove myself.”
Aiming for European football
Beyond his admiration for Arsenal, the 25-year-old has also expressed a desire to play in Europe’s biggest competitions. He added: “Any team in the Champions League or Europa League — that’s the goal.
It won’t happen instantly; it will take time, goals and consistent performances. I’ve worked my whole life for this, and I’m going to keep working hard. That’s my mentality.”
