Newcastle United could compete with some of Europe’s top clubs in the race to sign Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande in the coming weeks.
Reports suggest a January bid might give Newcastle a significant edge in securing the Ivorian international ahead of other contenders.
Since their Saudi-led takeover in 2022, Newcastle have strengthened nearly every area of their squad, upgrading positions like full-back, winger, and striker.
The midfield has also been enhanced with global stars such as Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
However, the centre-back position remains an area needing reinforcement, with Sven Botman being the only major signing in recent years.
An ageing defence may push Newcastle to act decisively in acquiring Diomande, who is on the radar of several elite European clubs.
Newcastle Have Diomande ‘On Shortlist’
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Newcastle are targeting Diomande as a potential long-term partner for Botman in central defence.
The 19-year-old has drawn attention from numerous clubs after being described as an “absolute freak” for his exceptional talent.
The race to sign him may come down to who moves first, with Bayern Munich reportedly preferring to act during the summer.
However, Newcastle’s interest, combined with competition from Premier League rivals such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United, could shift the dynamics of a potential deal.
The financial strength of the Premier League suggests that any team making a move in January would alter the transfer landscape.
Diomande, who joined Sporting in 2023, is under contract until 2027 with a release clause of approximately £70 million.
However, A Bola reports a deal could be struck for a fee between £43 million and £50 million.
Despite interest from multiple suitors, Sporting may resist selling Diomande mid-season, as they aim to secure their second Primeira Liga title in three years following the departure of manager Ruben Amorim.
