Newcastle United cult hero ‘in discussions’ over tier 10 move after bold approach from chairman.

Twitch streamer Aaron Hunt, recently appointed chairman of North West Counties Football League side Daisy Hill FC, has revealed unexpected discussions with former Newcastle United striker Papiss Demba Cisse about a potential move to the club.

Cisse, now 39, made a significant impact during his four-year spell in English football, becoming an icon not only for Newcastle United but for the Premier League as a whole.

His arrival from SC Freiburg in January 2012 for £9 million was followed by a remarkable start, netting 13 goals in 14 appearances and helping Newcastle secure Europa League football.

His time at St. James’ Park was defined by more than just his goal tally.

Some of his strikes remain legendary, including a stunning 37-yard effort against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which is still widely replayed, and a beautiful finish against Swansea City.

Since leaving Newcastle in 2016, Cisse has continued his career across China, Turkey, and France.

Most recently, in 2023, he was reported to be training with seventh-tier side Macclesfield.

Despite not being attached to a club, he told Chronicle Live last year that he still aspired to play for another two seasons.

Now, an unexpected opportunity to return to English football has emerged, as revealed by Daisy Hill’s new chairman, Hunt.

“I spoke to Papiss Cisse about potentially coming in,” Hunt said during a live stream while Daisy Hill played Atherton.

Hunt, who gained attention for virtually managing the club on Football Manager before taking over in real life, stunned fellow streamer Angryginge, real name Morgan Burtwistle, with the revelation.

However, Newcastle supporters hoping for this unlikely move to materialize might be disappointed.

Even if a deal were struck, they would have to undertake a 210-mile round trip to the Westhoughton suburb of Bolton to see their former striker in action. As of now, no agreement has been reached.

“I had a chat with him because I followed him, and then he followed me back and started liking posts about Daisy Hill,” Hunt explained. “I messaged him and asked, ‘Have you still got a pair of boots, Papiss?'”

“He said yes, but then his agent got involved and mentioned that clubs were already interested in signing him for next season.

He implied it wouldn’t be a good look for Cisse to come here and play. I just thought, ‘Alright then, play nowhere!’”
