Newcastle United Explain Decision Not to Appeal Anthony Gordon’s Red Card

Anthony Gordon’s suspension was a significant setback for Newcastle, not just for the remainder of that match but also for the next three games, including a crucial Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Following the game, speculation arose that Newcastle might appeal the red card in hopes of overturning the suspension.

Gordon was sent off after retaliating with a shove against Jan Paul van Hecke, who had been pulling his shirt.

Unfortunately, his hands made contact with van Hecke’s head—an act deemed violent conduct.

Referee Anthony Taylor, not for the first time, showed red to a Newcastle player ahead of a Carabao Cup final.

Eddie Howe Explains Why Newcastle Chose Not to Appeal

Despite initial discussions about appealing the decision, Newcastle ultimately decided against it, believing it would be unsuccessful.

Several pundits, including former referee Dermot Gallagher, suggested the appeal would not stand, and manager Eddie Howe echoed that sentiment when speaking to reporters.

“There was no intention from Anthony,” Howe explained. “Without delving too much into the incident, the player [Van Hecke] bends down, making the push appear worse than it was.

“Anthony never meant to hurt anyone, but we had to assess whether the appeal had a chance of success.

If there was no realistic chance, then there was no point in pursuing it. Anthony understands that.

“We discussed it internally with the relevant people, including legal advisors, and ultimately felt there were not enough grounds to challenge the decision.”

Gordon to Miss Another Wembley Final

Had intent played a role in the review, Newcastle’s only argument would have been that Gordon did not mean to strike van Hecke’s head.

However, the fact remains that contact was made, and by the letter of the law, it warranted a red card. Attempting an appeal would likely have been futile and a waste of time.

As a result, Gordon is now set to miss another Wembley final since joining Newcastle.

Two years ago, he was unavailable for the Carabao Cup final due to being cup-tied.

However, the circumstances are different this time.

Unlike before, when he was still settling in, Gordon is now a key player for Newcastle. His absence in such an important fixture is a major loss for the team.
