Blackpool have confirmed that former Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has been dismissed with immediate effect.

The decision follows a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to AFC Wimbledon, leaving the Seasiders languishing in 23rd place in League One.

Bruce, appointed in September 2024, oversaw a brief period of optimism last season, but his side’s poor start to the current campaign ultimately cost him his job.

At 64, speculation is growing that Bruce could now bring an end to his long managerial career.

The veteran boss had previously stated that Newcastle United would be his final job in management following his departure from St James’ Park in October 2021.

Yet, he returned to the sidelines with West Bromwich Albion soon after, though that spell lasted just eight months before ending in disappointment.

Blackpool’s official statement

A short club announcement confirmed Bruce’s exit, along with assistant head coach Steve Agnew and first-team coach Stephen Clemence. It read:

“Blackpool Football Club can confirm the departure of head coach Steve Bruce, assistant head coach Steve Agnew, and first-team coach Stephen Clemence.

The club would like to thank them for their efforts and wish them the very best for the future. Stephen Dobbie and Steve Banks will assume responsibility for first-team matters until a permanent appointment is made.”

Bruce accepts the blame

In his final post-match interview following the defeat to Wimbledon, Bruce took full responsibility for the team’s struggles. He admitted:

“I can make as many excuses as I want, but that’s not in my nature. Today we were nowhere near the level required, and for that, I need to take responsibility.”

Reflecting on his Newcastle United exit

Following his departure from Newcastle in 2021, Bruce revealed that he had even advised the club’s new Saudi-backed owners to dismiss him. He explained:

“I had to say to them, ‘Look, you might have to take me out of the equation.’ It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to say, but I knew it was best for the club.

Everything around Newcastle was euphoric — the only negative was me.

“They asked who I’d recommend, and I suggested Eddie Howe and Steven Gerrard. I never wanted to walk away, but I knew it was time.

The club needed a clean break and to remove the negativity, which unfortunately was me.”
