Newcastle United are reportedly targeting Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi as they look to bolster their squad ahead of a return to European competition.

According to recent reports from Italy, the Magpies have identified the former Arsenal player as a key target for the summer transfer window.

Eddie Howe’s side are on track to qualify for next season’s Champions League and have already guaranteed a place in European football, regardless of their final league position.

Their Carabao Cup triumph has ensured continental competition, increasing the demand for squad depth. With that in mind, Guendouzi has emerged as a serious midfield option.

The club is expected to step up their pursuit in the coming weeks, with Guendouzi now viewed as a primary target.

Lazio are reportedly demanding a fee exceeding £42.5 million to part with Guendouzi—nearly four times what they initially paid to secure his services less than a year ago.

The 26-year-old began his professional journey with Lorient in Ligue 1, making 30 senior appearances before moving to Arsenal in July 2018 for a fee around £7 million.

Then-Gunners boss Unai Emery spoke highly of him, calling Guendouzi a “talented young player” with “big potential.”

Guendouzi impressed immediately upon his arrival in north London, featuring in 48 matches across all competitions during his debut season.

He remained a regular under Emery, but his playing time declined after Mikel Arteta took charge.

A notable incident involving Brighton’s Neal Maupay in June 2020 led to disciplinary action.

Guendouzi was excluded from training sessions and matchday squads amid concerns about his attitude and conduct.

He did not play for Arsenal again and was sent on loan to Hertha Berlin for the 2020/21 campaign.

The following season, Guendouzi joined Marseille on loan and performed well enough to earn a permanent transfer for £9 million in the summer of 2022.

Despite that move, he only stayed one more year at the Stade Velodrome before moving to Lazio on loan in August 2023, with an option to buy.

After an impressive stint in Rome, Lazio exercised the option and signed him permanently last summer.

Guendouzi has maintained consistent form throughout the current season, drawing attention from Premier League clubs, notably Newcastle United and Aston Villa, who are both keen to bring him back to England.
