Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce reportedly targets Newcastle United defender Lloyd Kelly.
Fenerbahce have reportedly made an offer to sign Newcastle United defender Lloyd Kelly, as per reports from Turkey.
The 26-year-old joined Newcastle on a free transfer from AFC Bournemouth last summer but has struggled for game time.
The form of Dan Burn and Fabian Schar at centre-back, along with Lewis Hall at left-back, has limited Kelly’s opportunities.
Sven Botman’s return from a long-term knee injury has further reduced his chances of breaking into the starting XI.
Kelly started Newcastle’s FA Cup third-round win over Bromley on Sunday but is expected to return to the bench for Wednesday’s Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park.
His last Premier League start was in November during a 2-0 home defeat to West Ham United.
According to Sercan Hamzaoglu of Haber Global, Fenerbahce, managed by Jose Mourinho, have submitted a formal offer for Kelly, and negotiations are ongoing.
It’s not uncommon for Newcastle defenders to be linked with moves to Turkey. A year ago, Jamaal Lascelles was reportedly close to a transfer there.
However, despite Kelly’s limited playing time, a move just six months into his five-year contract appears unlikely.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe recently acknowledged Kelly’s challenging start at the club, attributing it to the strong performances of other defenders.
“Lloyd is a versatile player who can play multiple positions,” Howe said.
“Dan and Fabian have been excellent in central defense, and we’ve been strong defensively.
I prefer a settled back four to maintain stability and relationships within the team. Lloyd is training hard and waiting for his chance.”
On Sunday, Howe also dismissed speculation about players leaving, emphasizing Newcastle’s limited squad depth.
“I don’t want to discuss losing players because our squad is small,” Howe said.
“We lost Harvey [Barnes] to injury today, which further reduces our numbers. Letting players go isn’t something I’m considering at the moment.”
Kelly’s future at Newcastle remains uncertain, but a mid-season departure seems unlikely given the club’s squad limitations and Howe’s reluctance to make changes.
