One of Eddie Howe’s biggest challenges this season has been structuring Newcastle’s front three.
Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes excel on the left wing, while Joelinton has also delivered his best performances in that position.
However, injuries have forced Gordon to play in unfamiliar roles, including up front, particularly after Alexander Isak’s recent injury against Palace.
Gordon’s adaptability has come at a cost. Constant positional changes have led to a notable dip in his form.
At the end of last season, Gordon stated his preference for playing on the left wing, considering it his strongest position.
However, against Crystal Palace, he started on the right wing with Joelinton on the left. This changed after Isak’s injury, with Gordon moving to center-forward.
In both roles, Gordon struggled to make an impact. He didn’t manage a single shot on goal, although Newcastle only registered one attempt in the entire match.
He did, however, play a key role in the team’s goal, delivering a cross from a set-piece that led to Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi scoring an own goal.
Despite this contribution, Gordon’s overall performance was lackluster.
He lost possession 13 times, completed only 75% of his passes, and failed to complete any dribbles.
Howe now faces the task of unlocking Gordon’s potential and finding a way to maximize his impact on the team.
After the match, journalist Craig Hope criticized Gordon’s work rate and body language.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Hope said, “Anthony Gordon continues to be a puzzle wrapped inside an enigma.
There’s some good, some bad, a little bit of this, a little bit of that.”
Hope noted that Gordon’s demeanor didn’t always inspire confidence, particularly as he switched between positions.
“He started on the right today and eventually moved to center-forward,” Hope added. “It’s a continuation of square pegs in round holes.”
For Gordon, finding consistency and regaining confidence in his preferred position could be key to turning his season around.
For Howe, balancing injuries and form in the attacking lineup remains a pressing concern.
