Anthony Elanga’s Newcastle spell has started unevenly following his £55 million summer move
Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga has responded to recent criticism surrounding his form since joining the club during the summer transfer window.
Elanga completed a £55 million move from Nottingham Forest to St James’ Park but is yet to record a goal or an assist for his new side.
Despite that, the 23-year-old has shown flashes of quality, notably excelling in the 4-0 Europa League victory over Union SG, where he was one of the standout performers.
He also impressed against Barcelona, giving left-back Gerard Martin a difficult time during Newcastle’s other Champions League fixture.
However, his Premier League performances have been less impactful, leading to growing questions from sections of the fanbase about his lack of direct goal contributions—particularly given the significant fee Newcastle paid for him.
Elanga, though, remains calm and confident that his breakthrough moment will come soon. Speaking to Expressen while on international duty with Sweden ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Kosovo, he said:
“It’s a marathon, not a sprint. It’s all about staying focused. I know how good I am and how good I can be. When I get my chances, I have to take them.
Once I score, everything will click. It’s a new system with new players, and we’re still getting used to each other.”
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe also praised Elanga’s work ethic and impact, though he noted there is still room for improvement following Sunday’s win over Nottingham Forest.
The former Manchester United winger has quickly developed a strong relationship with Howe, describing him as the best coach he has worked under in his career.
“He’s a fantastic coach, and I’m learning so much from him,” Elanga said. “For me, he’s the best coach I’ve ever had.
He helps me both on and off the pitch, and I can feel myself improving all the time.”
Elanga went on to highlight the demands of Howe’s high-intensity system and the importance of squad rotation. “I’ve played ten games, started six. We’ll play around 60 this season.
The coach manages things well to keep everyone fresh. The intensity is high, but we’re winning games—and that’s what matters most.”
