Dan Burn Set to Sign New Contract at Newcastle United Following Breakout Season

Dan Burn is on the verge of signing a new contract with Newcastle United, capping off what has been a remarkable chapter in his footballing journey.

His performances this past season have exceeded expectations, earning him recognition at both club and international levels.

Hailing from Blyth, Burn realized a boyhood dream when he joined Newcastle from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2022 for £13 million.

At the time, few could have foreseen the significant role he would go on to play. Since arriving at St James’ Park, Burn has become a dependable and versatile defender, comfortably operating both as a centre-back and at left-back.

His consistency and leadership have seen him become an integral figure in the Magpies’ starting eleven, and he now holds a respected place in the club’s senior leadership group.

One of Burn’s most memorable moments came in the Champions League last season when he scored in Newcastle’s famous 4-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at home.

It was a historic evening for the club and an unforgettable one for the 33-year-old. However, even that incredible goal was arguably eclipsed by his crucial header against Liverpool in March, which helped secure the Carabao Cup—ending the club’s 70-year wait for domestic silverware.

Following that triumph, Burn received a call-up to the England national team, linking up with the squad the very next day.

Now, Newcastle are set to reward Burn for his outstanding contributions. His current contract runs until 2026, but discussions about an extension have progressed positively.

Back in October, Burn openly spoke about his long-term aspirations, revealing his desire to end his playing career at Newcastle before potentially moving into coaching or media work.

“I’ve always wanted to finish my career here,” Burn said. “I’ve moved back home, my children are close to their family, and we see our loved ones often.

That’s always been the dream. We’ve got a strong group of players here and the club is on an upward path, so I want to be part of that journey as long as I can.”

He emphasized his commitment to continuing at a high level, saying, “I feel like I’ve performed well this season. I’m not content just training well and sitting on the bench. I want to play. I genuinely believe I deserve to be playing in this team.”

Burn also spoke about life after football, adding: “The worst thing would be finishing my playing career without anything lined up. I think it’s vital to have a plan, especially once you hit 30.

People start saying you’re nearly finished! But I’m still enjoying it and feel I have plenty of fight left.”

He has already begun working on his coaching qualifications and dabbles in media-related work, always looking to remain involved in football. “I’d love to stay involved with the club in some way when I retire,” he added.

Manager Eddie Howe has heaped praise on Burn throughout his time at Newcastle.

Reflecting on Burn’s impact earlier this year, Howe said, “He’s without a doubt one of my best signings.

He’s been outstanding—more than we expected. His talent, leadership, and consistency have made him a cornerstone of our success.”
