Speaking to Estadio Deportivo, Virginia admitted he is unhappy with his limited role and wants more regular playing time.
“As a player, my ambition isn’t to be a second choice for long, but that’s the reality I have at Everton.
I have to work hard and push Pickford to be better as well,” Virginia stated.
He emphasized that game time is crucial for his development.
“With minutes comes experience. Playing regularly will take me to another level.”
With only a few months left on his contract, Virginia confirmed he is unlikely to be offered a renewal.
Instead, the 25-year-old is keen to secure consistent first-team football, with La Liga emerging as a preferred destination.
Virginia’s La Liga Ambitions
Since arriving from Arsenal in 2018, Virginia has struggled to make an impact at Everton due to Jordan Pickford’s dominance as the first-choice goalkeeper.
He has been weighing his options since January and appears ready for a fresh start.
Virginia last enjoyed regular football in the 2022/23 season while on loan at SC Cambuur.
After years in England, he now feels a move closer to Portugal would be ideal, making Spain an attractive option.
“The Spanish league is a competition I love. Playing there one day would be a fantastic opportunity, but it’s too early to say for sure.
We’ll see what happens in the market,” he explained.
Virginia also noted the similarities between Spain and his native Portugal, making La Liga an appealing destination.
“I love Spain—its culture, its football. It would feel like coming home,” he added.
With Everton planning major squad changes, Virginia appears set to move on in search of regular minutes—potentially making La Liga his next chapter.
