His ability to compete physically while also contributing offensively makes him a well-rounded option for Potter.

The left-back spot is Scarles’ to claim, given the struggles of his more experienced competition.
Potter appears to have faith in the youngster, having started him in the last three matches, including wins over Leicester and Arsenal and a loss to Newcastle.
In fact, Scarles has featured in all eight matches since Potter took charge.
Having an academy graduate as a key starter is always a boost, both for the team and its supporters. Since Declan Rice’s departure to Arsenal in 2023, West Ham has lacked a true homegrown star.
