Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Malick Fofana, the highly-rated Lyon winger, according to ESPN.

The 2024/25 campaign was already a memorable one for the Magpies after they ended a 70-year wait for silverware by defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final.

The season was further sweetened by securing a spot in the Champions League on the final day of the Premier League.

Under Eddie Howe, who took over in 2021, Newcastle have continued to make remarkable progress, qualifying for Europe’s elite competition for the second time in three years.

With Champions League football on the horizon, the club is looking to strengthen several areas of the squad, particularly in wide attacking positions. One player now firmly on their radar is Malick Fofana.

According to ESPN, Newcastle are among a host of clubs monitoring the 20-year-old Belgian, who has been labelled an “unbelievable” talent.

Fofana joined Lyon from Gent last summer and quickly made an impression during his debut season, helping his new side finish sixth in Ligue 1 and qualify for the Europa League.

However, Lyon’s financial difficulties saw them provisionally relegated from Ligue 1 in late 2024. To retain their top-flight status, they are required to raise significant funds.

Fofana is among the players likely to attract strong offers, and ESPN reports he could be available for a fee between £40 million and £45 million. While Lyon would prefer to keep him, a sale may be necessary.

Fofana primarily operates on the left wing but is also comfortable playing on either flank, which would suit Howe’s desire for versatile and dynamic wide options.

With the Magpies also progressing in their pursuit of Joao Pedro, there appears to be a clear intent to revamp their attacking department.

Still only 20, Fofana is viewed as a long-term investment who could blossom into one of the world’s leading wingers in the years ahead.
