Newcastle United’s ongoing struggles in securing a striker this transfer window have prompted them to shift their focus to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, according to reports.
The Magpies are now believed to have moved Sesko to the top of their shortlist, with plans to pair him alongside Alexander Isak in a potential tactical shift to a two-striker formation under Eddie Howe.
Initially, Newcastle had pursued Eintracht Frankfurt’s rising star Hugo Ekitike in a bid to strengthen their forward line.
However, with rival clubs entering the fray following their reported £70 million offer, their chances have dimmed.
Although Brentford’s Yoane Wissa remains a player of interest, Tottenham Hotspur are now believed to be favourites in that race, prompting Newcastle to consider alternative targets.
Report: Newcastle Eyeing Sesko Switch
According to TBR Football, Newcastle are now seriously considering Sesko after stepping away from the competition for Ekitike, especially amid strong interest from Liverpool.
Talks between the Magpies and Frankfurt had progressed well, but with Liverpool boss Arne Slot reportedly securing personal terms with Ekitike, Newcastle have turned their attention elsewhere.
Sesko now appears to be their primary target. Arsenal, once interested in the Slovenian forward, have instead moved to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, leaving the path clearer for Newcastle.
Leipzig’s failure to qualify for European football next season could further motivate a move.
Eddie Howe is said to be a keen admirer of the 22-year-old, who boasts an impressive record of 39 goals in 87 games for Leipzig, including four in the Champions League and 13 in the Bundesliga last season.
Sesko’s blistering pace has earned him the nickname “speed demon.”
Although the striker signed a new deal with Leipzig last summer and is open to staying, he is reportedly willing to explore other options, particularly clubs that match his ambition.
Newcastle’s interest is genuine, though Sesko’s £78 million valuation would surpass the club’s current transfer record.
Additionally, talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has noted that a move from Newcastle would not come as a surprise, especially given Sesko’s international pedigree—already Slovenia’s fourth-highest goalscorer with 41 caps at just 22 years old.
