A major update has emerged on Saturday afternoon concerning Newcastle United’s efforts to sign James Trafford.

Earlier this week, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported that Newcastle had submitted a £25 million bid, plus add-ons, for the Burnley goalkeeper.

That offer was initially rejected, according to The Times’ Martin Hardy. However, fresh developments suggest a deal is now close.

In a new update on X, Edwards wrote: “Hearing James Trafford to Newcastle is pretty much done.”

While the final transfer fee hasn’t been disclosed, earlier reports suggested Burnley were holding out for around £30 million.

Edwards’ latest post implies that Newcastle have increased their offer and reached an agreement with the Clarets.

There had already been reports of a gentleman’s agreement in place, allowing Trafford to leave if an acceptable bid came in.

With personal terms agreed—something Fabrizio Romano confirmed earlier in the week—it now appears all parties are aligned.

Trafford himself revealed on the Fozcast that he was keen to join Newcastle last summer, though a move failed to materialise at the time. Now, 12 months later, the club has returned with greater determination.

Adding further weight to the rumours, Burnley recently signed German Under-20 goalkeeper Alex Weiss from Bundesliga 2 side Karlsruhe SC, likely as a replacement.

Additionally, current Newcastle keeper Nick Pope may have hinted at Trafford’s arrival, posting a “see you soon” message to the 22-year-old England international on Instagram.

All signs now point to Trafford becoming Newcastle’s first major signing of the summer.
