The 27-year-old remains a long-term target for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, which won’t participate in European competitions this season after Manchester United’s FA Cup final victory ended their hopes of playing in the Conference League.
Newcastle, boasting one of the Premier League’s top strikers in Alexander Isak, is in the market for a new centre-forward due to uncertainty surrounding Callum Wilson’s future.
Sources have told 90min that Newcastle initially attempted to sign Calvert-Lewin before the PSR deadline on June 30, in a deal that would have involved Yankuba Minteh moving the other way. Minteh ultimately joined Brighton & Hove Albion instead. With the PSR deadline now passed and Everton hopeful of finalizing a club takeover soon, there is less financial pressure to sell Calvert-Lewin.
However, Calvert-Lewin has just a year remaining on his Everton contract, and it’s unclear if he’ll agree to a new deal. He has been unable to reach terms with Newcastle, who are reluctant to disrupt their current wage structure. A move to St. James’ Park appears unlikely unless the club changes its stance.
Newcastle has already secured deals for Odysseas Vlachodimos, Lloyd Kelly, Lewis Hall, and John Ruddy this summer. They also raised additional funds before the PSR deadline with the £35m sale of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.
Everton has been active in the transfer market as well, bringing in Tim Iroegbunam and Iliman Ndiaye from Aston Villa and Marseille, respectively. They have also sanctioned exits for Lewis Dobbin and Ben Godfrey, with the latter joining last season’s Europa League winners Atalanta for £11m.
