Newcastle United look set for a relatively calm summer when it comes to keeping hold of their key players, with Eddie Howe unlikely to lose any major stars in this transfer window.

And according to journalist Sascha Tavolieri, the club has already reached an agreement on personal terms with the Brazilian attacker.

Tavolieri added that Chelsea have now stepped up their efforts to sign Pedro, despite Newcastle’s head start in the negotiations.

He wrote: “Chelsea FC working hard to make up for lost ground in the Joao Pedro case… Newcastle already agreed terms with the Brazilian & made 2 bids to #BHAFC. As revealed on 26th May, Blues made Pedro a priority target in front & are preparing a new assault to convince Brighton.”

Newcastle reportedly submitted a £50 million bid for Pedro in recent days, but Brighton swiftly turned it down.

While Chelsea’s pursuit might complicate matters, it could also offer Newcastle an opportunity to reconsider.

Pedro is indeed a highly talented player—labelled “special” by Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler—but his limited experience on the right wing raises concerns.

With Isak firmly established as Newcastle’s first-choice centre-forward, Pedro would likely be deployed in a wider role, which may not suit his strengths.

Investing heavily—potentially up to £60 million—in a player who may struggle to adapt could prove risky.

Instead, it might make more sense for Newcastle to target a natural right winger. Ironically, the club had earlier deemed Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo too expensive, though he now looks like an ideal fit for their needs.

In short, while Pedro remains a tempting option, Newcastle must weigh up whether he’s the right profile for the role they need to fill.
