Aaron Ramsdale

 

A familiar name for Newcastle fans, Aaron Ramsdale has been on the club’s radar for some time now.

 

The 27-year-old Southampton goalkeeper is almost certain to seek a return to the Premier League following his side’s relegation.

 

Ramsdale brings significant top-flight experience, including Champions League appearances with Arsenal.

 

He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year for the 2022/23 season, showcasing his high-level performances.

 

As an England international, like Trafford, Ramsdale is proven at the top level and could be available for a more reasonable price due to a £25 million relegation release clause in his contract.

 

What makes Ramsdale particularly appealing is his exceptional distribution—an area where Newcastle’s current number one, Nick Pope, has often struggled.

 

A modern goalkeeper with strong passing ability, Ramsdale could elevate Newcastle’s play from the back while offering a reliable presence between the sticks.

Andriy Lunin

 

If Newcastle are looking for a goalkeeper with experience at the highest level and a winning pedigree, Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin should be a serious contender.

 

The Ukrainian has spent much of his time at Madrid serving as backup to Thibaut Courtois, limiting his minutes, but he remains highly rated.

 

Lunin was previously linked to Newcastle in 2023 when Pope was sidelined with a long-term injury, though that move never came to pass.

 

Since then, he’s won his second UEFA Champions League title with Real and has built a reputation as a dependable understudy.

 

During the 2024/25 campaign, Lunin featured in seven matches for Madrid and kept four clean sheets.

 

According to Defensa Central, the 25-year-old will be available for around £25 million this summer, making him a strong value option.

Walter Benítez

 

For a more budget-friendly route, Walter Benítez is an intriguing option. At 32, he’s older than the other candidates, but he brings experience and is currently available on a free transfer after departing PSV Eindhoven.

 

Benítez played every match in PSV’s Eredivisie title-winning campaign and also helped them reach the Champions League round of 16.

 

His performances were instrumental in victories over strong opponents, including a win over Lloyd Kelly’s Juventus in the play-off round.

 

With Champions League experience and consistency at club level, Benítez could offer stability.
