Former Manchester United and West Ham scout Mick Brown, who remains closely connected within football circles, has revealed that Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has concerns about the consistency of West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Brown stated that although Kudus is a player with clear talent, his inconsistent performances have raised doubts within the Magpies’ camp.

Kudus, who has a reported £85 million release clause, may also be financially out of reach unless West Ham are willing to negotiate a lower transfer fee.

As reported by Football Insider on 9 June, Newcastle are unwilling to meet the full buyout clause and would only consider a move if a compromise on the asking price can be reached.

The Ghana international endured a mixed campaign in East London, registering five goals and four assists in 35 appearances during a season where West Ham struggled to find consistency.

That lack of impact has seemingly led to a dip in interest from other potential suitors.

Back in May, Football Insider also disclosed that Kudus is not considering a move to the Saudi Pro League and is determined to remain in Europe if he leaves West Ham.

This coincided with reports suggesting that West Ham are open to listening to offers, with new manager Graham Potter willing to reshape the squad without the 24-year-old midfielder.

Brown, who played a key role in talent identification during Manchester United’s dominant era, believes there’s no doubt about Kudus’ ability—but consistency is a major red flag for Newcastle.

“Kudus would be a good fit for Newcastle in terms of his raw talent,” Brown said. “He’s capable of beating players, scoring goals, and creating chances. On his day, he’s a real game-changer.

“But the issue is that he doesn’t bring that level of performance regularly. He drifts in and out of games, and there are times it feels like the team is a man down when he’s on the pitch.

“Eddie Howe wants players who deliver consistent performances week in, week out—and Kudus hasn’t shown he can do that yet.

“There’s a question mark about whether they can unlock that potential more consistently, and that’s the risk.

“At £85 million, there’s absolutely no chance Newcastle would agree to that. They’ll only consider it if the price is significantly reduced—and even then, they may still explore other options first.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also monitoring other targets, with Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga back on their radar.

Football Insider reported on 15 June that Forest turned down a £35 million offer from the Magpies last summer and are now demanding £50 million for the Swedish winger.

Elanga had an impressive campaign, scoring six goals and supplying 11 assists while appearing in every Premier League match for Forest. His contributions have made him an integral part of their squad.

However, according to Brown, Elanga is eager to join Newcastle, and the club is expected to open discussions soon as they aim to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.
