Opinion: 16-year-old sensation could be the ideal solution to Everton’s long-term issues.
Justin Clarke joined Everton from AFC Wimbledon in September and has quickly made an impact at Finch Farm.
The 16-year-old forward continued his impressive goal-scoring streak for the Under-18s, scoring a decisive goal that helped Leighton Baines’ side secure a comeback victory against Derby County with a 3-2 win on November 2.
At Goodison Park, Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom have struggled to secure consistent starting positions on the right wing this season, highlighting a significant weakness in Sean Dyche’s attacking lineup.
However, Dyche may find a long-term solution to this issue within the ranks at Finch Farm, as Clarke consistently demonstrates his potential in the academy.
While some may dismiss the idea of introducing a 16-year-old into the first team, it’s worth recalling the last young talent who made the leap from Everton to stardom.
Although Clarke may not reach the same heights as Wayne Rooney in his storied career, the adage “if you’re good enough, you’re old enough” holds true.
Clarke has been thriving on the flanks at Finch Farm, and his recent goal against Derby County marked his sixth in just four appearances for the Under-18s.
This tally includes a brace against Newcastle United and another goal against Blackburn Rovers, demonstrating his striking ability.
Dyche has shown a willingness to trust young talent, as evidenced by 19-year-old Roman Dixon’s inclusion in the starting lineup during the 4-0 defeat to Tottenham earlier this season.
Additionally, Harrison Armstrong was named in the matchday squad for the recent game against Southampton.
However, Harrison is likely to return to Leeds United at the season’s end after a series of disappointing performances, while Lindstrom has not fared much better; both loan spells have been largely ineffective.
Everton will almost certainly look to sign another forward during the summer transfer window, but in the meantime, Clarke could find himself receiving chances in early rounds of the FA Cup or if injuries strike at Goodison Park.
Dyche would be wise to keep an eye on Clarke’s development this season, as his emergence could save the club millions if he fulfills his potential.
