Russell Martin is reportedly on the verge of becoming Rangers’ new manager, which would remove him from consideration should Leicester City opt to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Just last week, several reports suggested Martin was a leading candidate to succeed van Nistelrooy at Leicester.

However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano now claims Martin is set to take charge at Ibrox, having “accepted the project” offered by Rangers.

Martin’s name emerged early among the favourites to replace van Nistelrooy after doubts about the Dutchman’s future surfaced.

Known for his possession-heavy style of play—arguably even more intense than Enzo Maresca’s—Martin led Southampton to Premier League promotion via the play-offs.

However, his tactics struggled in the top flight. Southampton managed only five points from 16 games under his leadership, leading to his dismissal.

That exit left him available and potentially appealing to Leicester, especially given the club’s financial situation.

With Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) looming and losses nearing regulatory limits, hiring an out-of-work manager without a compensation fee may have seemed like a practical option.

Despite that, many City fans were opposed to the idea of Martin taking charge.

His unpopularity among supporters became clear during Leicester’s final match of the season at Bournemouth, where fans voiced discontent about Martin—directly in front of director of football Jon Rudkin.

Martin’s move to Rangers will therefore come as a relief to a portion of the Leicester fanbase. Rangers, meanwhile, have been actively searching for a new permanent manager since interim boss Barry Ferguson was ruled out of continuing in the role.

In addition to Martin, the Glasgow club have also been linked with Davide Ancelotti, son of Carlo Ancelotti.

Davide has served as his father’s assistant at major clubs such as Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton,and Real Madrid.
