A New Chapter Begins at St James' Park as Paul Mitchell's Exit Hands Eddie Howe Full Control of Transfer Dealings
Newcastle United are preparing to reignite their pursuit of Anthony Elanga following the departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell.
Although Mitchell officially stepped down on June 30, he had already transitioned responsibilities to head coach Eddie Howe, recruitment chief Steve Nickson, and assistant Andy Howe in the days leading up to his exit.
Elanga remains a key target for the Magpies. Despite having a £45 million offer rejected earlier, Newcastle have returned to Nottingham Forest with an improved bid exceeding £50 million for the Swedish winger, who previously played for Manchester United.
Eddie Howe is eager to secure Elanga’s signature. The winger is seen as a potential long-term replacement for Miguel Almiron and a marquee signing that would reinforce Newcastle’s ambitions to their current squad. However, Forest continue to insist that Elanga is not for sale.
Nonetheless, club sources at St James’ Park remain optimistic. If a deal that aligns with Newcastle’s valuation can be agreed upon, they are ready to open talks over personal terms with the 23-year-old Forest star.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are also facing decisions over the futures of out-of-contract players Callum Wilson and goalkeeper John Ruddy.
Although the club previously confirmed contract talks with both, there has been no update, and pre-season training starts in just six days.
In a recent statement, Newcastle said: “Callum Wilson and John Ruddy are set to be out of contract at the end of June, however the club has opened discussions with both players about their futures and new contracts could still be agreed.”
These unresolved matters now fall squarely under the remit of Howe and his coaching team as they turn their attention to building the squad for the upcoming season.
With rival clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool already making significant moves in the transfer window, Newcastle must act swiftly to avoid falling behind.
