OPINION: Leeds United Should Consider Peterborough United’s Harrison Burrows if Junior Firpo Departs

Leeds United face significant challenges in the transfer market following their defeat in the Championship play-off final, with players already departing Elland Road in the wake of their Wembley disappointment.

Jaidon Anthony, Connor Roberts, and Joe Rodon have all left at the end of their loan deals, with Rodon’s absence likely to be the most keenly felt by Leeds supporters. Their loss to Southampton complicates the possibility of securing the Welshman on a permanent basis, leaving uncertainty about future moves.

The squad needs reinforcement in several key areas, but Leeds must also be wary of other clubs targeting their top players. Willy Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville are expected to attract significant interest during the summer transfer window. Summerville, heavily linked with a move away, including interest from Chelsea, seems poised to depart.

The left-hand side of Leeds’ squad may require a complete overhaul. With Anthony returning to his parent club, Summerville potentially leaving, and Sam Byram’s contract expiring, the team faces a potential void. Luis Sinisterra was sold in January, and Jack Harrison, who spent the 2023/24 season away from Elland Road, could also leave. Additionally, Junior Firpo’s future is uncertain as he has been linked with a move away from West Yorkshire.

The Daily Mail reports that Leeds may need to raise up to £100 million in sales to comply with financial regulations and prevent major losses. Firpo, with only one year left on his contract, might be sold this summer after contributing eight assists in 33 competitive appearances during the 2023/24 season.

Peterborough United’s left-back, Harrison Burrows, is a potential replacement for Firpo. Despite conceding a penalty that led to Oxford United’s crucial goal in the League One play-off semis, Burrows had an impressive 2023/24 campaign, notably scoring a brace to win the EFL Trophy for Posh against Wycombe Wanderers. His attacking prowess, operating as a left-back, made a significant impact for Darren Ferguson’s side, demonstrating his potential to be a game-changer in the final third.

Burrows’ attacking skills could make him an ideal replacement for Firpo, who was a major threat out wide for Daniel Farke’s side last season. Firpo’s assist for Leeds’ fourth goal in the play-off semi-final second leg highlighted his effectiveness when driving forward. Burrows has prior experience in the second tier, which could ease his transition to life at Elland Road, especially with the confidence gained from his impactful season at the Weston Homes Stadium.

With Burrows’ contract extension option being triggered this summer, he has only a year remaining on his current deal. Even if Peterborough is reluctant to sell him cheaply, Leeds might have funds available from the potential sales of Summerville, Gnonto, and Archie Gray. These players alone could generate more than £100 million, and additional funds from Firpo’s potential departure could help finance a move for Burrows.

Not only would Burrows bring significant contributions on the pitch, but his attacking threat could also fill the void left by Firpo’s departure. Additionally, at 22 years old, he has the potential to improve and increase his valuation, making him a valuable long-term asset. Securing him to a long-term contract would help maximize his future price tag.

Leeds should pursue Burrows regardless of financial considerations, as his presence could positively transform the team. His ability to drive the team forward from the wide areas would make Leeds more dynamic and attacking, aligning with their best style of play.

In their bid to secure promotion back to the top tier at the second attempt, Leeds need to remain an attacking side. Burrows may need to improve defensively to succeed as a full-back in the second tier, but his youth suggests he will develop these skills.
