Opinion: Longtime West Ham starter appears finished as transfer plans take shape
Vladimir Coufal may bring his five-year West Ham tenure to a close before the summer transfer window.
The Czech international joined West Ham in 2020 and quickly became a fan favorite at the London Stadium.
The 32-year-old was a key figure under David Moyes but has seen his role diminish since the Scot’s departure.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, a departure now seems inevitable, and he may even be pushed out before making the decision himself.
Walker-Peters could replace Coufal at West Ham
It looks increasingly likely that the former Slavia Prague defender will leave East London in the summer.
Despite his years of reliable service, an extension does not seem to be in Graham Potter’s plans, especially given recent transfer developments.
The Hammers are reportedly keen on signing Kyle Walker-Peters from Southampton, who are expected to be relegated to the Championship [Ex-WHUEmployee].
The 27-year-old, who has two England caps, would offer valuable versatility in both full-back positions, making him a useful addition for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Should Potter bring him in, Coufal’s chances of reclaiming a starting role would all but disappear, making an exit the logical outcome.
Coufal set to leave West Ham
The Czech right-back has struggled to make an impact this season, with both Julen Lopetegui and Potter seemingly unconvinced by his performances.
His reduced playing time has largely been due to the arrival of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has been in outstanding form since joining from Manchester United.
The former Crystal Palace man has been virtually undroppable, leaving Coufal with limited opportunities.
As a result, Coufal’s minutes have significantly declined, and he may now be open to a move away from the London Stadium this summer.
Everton have expressed interest in signing him, and should he depart, it would pave the way for Walker-Peters’ arrival from Southampton.
For West Ham, securing a younger and more versatile full-back would strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.
While Coufal’s departure will mark the end of an era, the potential addition of Walker-Peters is likely to be seen as a positive step forward by the Hammers faithful.
