While it was always going to be difficult for the Hammers to secure three points against the reigning English champions, the team showed resilience. However, one key issue stood out over the course of the match.
West Ham Central suggested on their X account on September 1 that swapping the positions of Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus, who both struggled against Man City, could be a crucial tactical adjustment for Lopetegui this season.
Paqueta and Kudus may benefit from a position swap at West Ham United. In the game against Manchester City, Paqueta was easily dispossessed by Bernardo Silva in his own defensive third, which led to Erling Haaland scoring for the visitors.
The Brazilian midfielder had a particularly tough day, losing possession 14 times and making a critical error that contributed to the opening goal, as noted by Sofascore.
He was largely ineffective as City controlled the match.
Similarly, Kudus struggled on the flanks, completing only 50% of his dribbles, losing possession 12 times, and failing to register a shot on target.
He had two shots off-target and one blocked, indicating his lack of impact in wide areas.
Despite West Ham’s numerous signings this summer, maximizing the potential of this squad may depend on making better use of Kudus and Paqueta.
Once Fullkrug replaces Michail Antonio as the main forward, Lopetegui should consider moving Paqueta to a wider position and placing Kudus just behind the 6’2″ striker.
Fullkrug’s hold-up play and aerial ability could complement Kudus’s knack for finding space and creating opportunities, particularly in one-on-one situations through the middle.
Meanwhile, Paqueta, who completed 80% of his long balls against Man City, could provide accurate crosses and passes from a wider role, better utilizing his vision and technical skills.
Taking risks can lead to rewards in football, and Lopetegui should test this tactical switch in their upcoming match against Fulham after the international break.
