Opinion: Potter Needs to Reinstate West Ham Veteran After Youngster Struggles Against Liverpool

West Ham suffered their 15th Premier League defeat of the season on Sunday, continuing a difficult campaign that sees them hovering just above the relegation zone.

Luis Diaz gave Liverpool an early lead, but Potter’s side responded well, staying competitive throughout the match.

Their efforts were eventually rewarded when Andy Robertson scored an own goal late in the game to level the score.

Unfortunately for the Hammers, they couldn’t hold on, as Virgil van Dijk netted a last-minute winner for the Reds.

One of the key talking points from the match was Potter’s decision to start 19-year-old Oliver Scarles, who was tasked with facing Mohamed Salah.

The young defender found the challenge overwhelming, struggling to make an impact and eventually being substituted after just 57 minutes.

He managed only 37 touches and failed to register a successful tackle, as Salah consistently exploited his inexperience.

Scarles has shown glimpses of promise in his appearances this season, and there’s no doubt he has a bright future ahead of him.

However, with West Ham’s Premier League safety not yet confirmed, now may not be the right time for Potter to rely heavily on youth.

The Hammers currently sit 14 points ahead of Ipswich Town, offering a cushion, but it’s vital they don’t become complacent in the closing stages of the season.

Given the circumstances, Potter would be wise to turn to experience for their upcoming clash with Southampton on Saturday, 19 April.

Bringing Emerson back into the lineup could provide the stability and reliability the team needs.

The Italian full-back offers both defensive solidity and attacking support, making him a valuable asset in crucial matches.

At this stage of the season, every point matters, and West Ham must ensure they are fielding their strongest and most dependable lineup to secure their top-flight status.

While Scarles has potential, players like Emerson are key to seeing out the season successfully.
