As spring training nears its conclusion in Sarasota for the Orioles, the team faces challenging decisions regarding its roster composition. While many players demonstrate the skill and merit to earn a spot on the 26-man roster, the constraints of roster size inevitably result in some players being left out.
One such player facing disappointment is Kyle Stowers. Amidst a crowded outfield competition during camp, Stowers found himself demoted to the minor-league camp on Friday, alongside Heston Kjerstad and top prospect Jackson Holliday, as part of a series of team moves.
Stowers’ reaction to the demotion was understandably disheartening, reflecting the difficult nature of such decisions.
Stowers showcased his talent during spring training, evident in his impressive performance statistics. He maintained a .256/.267/.744 slash line, resulting in an impressive 1.011 OPS. Additionally, he recorded seven home runs and 14 RBIs in 43 at-bats across 19 Grapefruit League games.
The reality facing Stowers is the fierce competition among talented outfielders vying for limited roster spots. With only four or five spots available, tough decisions are inevitable, leading to players like Stowers being sent to the minors.
While Stowers had a promising start in 2022, earning a call-up in the second half of the season and securing a spot on the Opening Day roster in 2023, his playing time in the majors was limited, and he eventually spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Norfolk due to lack of opportunity and injuries.
Stowers’ performance indicates his readiness for the major leagues, but the Orioles’ current roster constraints make it challenging for him to secure consistent playing time. Unless the Orioles explore trading options, Stowers may remain in Triple-A, despite his evident major-league caliber skills.
