The Philadelphia Phillies are set to bolster their roster ahead of spring training with the addition of another All-Star free agent. According to MLB Network insider Joel Sherman, the Phillies have reached an agreement to sign outfielder David Dahl to a minor-league deal, pending a physical.
Dahl, a former top-10 first-round pick for the Colorado Rockies in 2012, burst onto the MLB scene in 2016 with one of the most remarkable rookie months in history, tying a 75-year-old record with hits in 17 consecutive games to start his career. His All-Star season came in 2019 when he posted a .302 batting average, 15 home runs, and 61 RBIs in 100 games played. Unfortunately, his breakout year was cut short by a severe ankle injury.
Injuries have been a recurring challenge for Dahl throughout his career, missing the entire 2017 season due to a rib stress reaction and playing just 24 games in 2020 before a season-ending shoulder injury. The pending physical becomes crucial given Dahl’s injury history. However, if deemed healthy, Dahl could present the Phillies with a potentially high-reward, low-risk addition.
The Phillies’ recent decision regarding star Bryce Harper likely influenced their pursuit of additional outfield depth.
