Everton Brace for Change as Kevin Thelwell Set to Exit Sporting Director Role This Summer
Since joining Everton from MLS side New York Red Bulls in 2022, Kevin Thelwell has overseen numerous signings at Goodison Park.
However, with The Friedkin Group now in charge following their takeover of the Toffees in December, they have initiated a series of changes—including the latest decision regarding Thelwell’s future.
Angus Kinnear, currently CEO of Leeds United, will join Everton at the end of the season.
His arrival is regarded as a major coup among several Premier League boards, particularly given his experience in managing stadium relocations.
Thelwell’s Tenure Divides Opinion
As Thelwell prepares to depart, both players and staff have voiced their support.
Midfielder Tim Iroegbunam recently praised the sporting director, stating he had done “more than people will ever know” for the club.
Despite this backing, Thelwell’s tenure has been met with skepticism from outsiders, largely due to the inconsistent success of his signings.
Everton’s ongoing relegation struggles during his time in charge have only fueled these doubts.
“I’d say he’s done a so-so job, not a spectacular one,” football analyst and commentator Ian Darke told Goodison News.
“Jesper Lindstrøm is starting to show more, Iliman Ndiaye has been a good signing, and Beto has improved under Moyes. Idrissa Gueye was a solid addition, but injuries have hampered other signings.
“You also have to consider the financial difficulties Everton faced before the Friedkin takeover when assessing Thelwell’s performance.”
Friedkins Reshaping Everton
Thelwell’s departure is just one of several major changes under the Friedkin Group’s leadership.
Their aggressive approach to football ownership—previously demonstrated at Roma—has already resulted in high-profile departures, including that of Sean Dyche. More exits are expected as they continue reshaping the club.
While Thelwell does not appear to have been outright dismissed, it is evident that there was no cohesive long-term strategy between him and the new owners.
A mutual decision to part ways seems the most likely explanation.
Kinnear’s appointment is not expected to be a direct replacement for Thelwell, as his expertise lies more in business operations rather than recruitment.
However, certain aspects of their responsibilities may overlap.
Meanwhile, David Moyes is focused on ensuring Everton remains in the Premier League as they prepare for their move to Bramley-Moore Dock, where a new chapter in the club’s history will officially begin in August.
