Aston Villa have endured a turbulent summer, but Unai Emery remains determined to build a squad capable of competing successfully on multiple fronts.

The Spaniard still has several areas to strengthen, although the £17m arrival of Atletico Madrid defender Matteo Ruggeri represents an important step forward.

His versatility across central defence and the left side gives Emery another useful option.

At Villa, he could provide a different dimension alongside Boubacar Kamara, who offers greater composure and control.

Gomes’ physicality and ability to win duels suit Emery’s demanding system, although the manager will expect him to improve his decision-making and become calmer in possession.

His performance against Bayern Munich, where he scored Villa’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat, showed both his attacking threat and areas that require improvement.

Gomes struggled against Bayern’s relentless pressing and must adapt to playing for a side expected to dominate more often.

With Youri Tielemans leaving for Manchester United, Amadou Onana facing a lengthy injury absence and Kamara only recently returning, Villa could still add another midfielder.

Reports suggest Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr could be available for around £30m.

The 23-year-old Senegal international has fallen down the pecking order at Spurs but previously demonstrated his potential under Ange Postecoglou.

Sarr combines energy with intelligent passing, disciplined tackling and an ability to carry the ball forward.

His technical qualities could make him an excellent partner for Kamara while also providing competition for Gomes.

Although Gomes offers greater physicality and aggression, Sarr may provide more balance and tactical sophistication.

Gomes struggled statistically with passing range, ball progression and chance creation last season, while Sarr has shown greater versatility in possession.

Both midfielders could thrive under Emery, but Sarr’s all-round qualities may ultimately give him the edge. If Emery can restore his confidence and consistency, the Tottenham midfielder could become a major asset at Villa Park.
