Premier League Clarifies Decision to Let Controversial Newcastle Goal Stand, Angering Tottenham

Lucas Bergvall’s pass clearly struck Joelinton’s hand before the ball fell to Bruno Guimaraes deep in Tottenham’s half.

Guimaraes then set up Anthony Gordon, who found the bottom corner to equalize Solanke’s earlier strike.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was visibly frustrated, raising both hands on the touchline as his players protested to the referee.

A statement from the Premier League Match Centre explained: “The referee’s decision to award the goal was confirmed by VAR, which reviewed a potential handball by Joelinton.

VAR deemed his arm was in a natural position, and the contact was accidental.”

Despite Tottenham’s anger, former England player Stuart Pearce supported the officials’ decision.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Pearce said: “The ball definitely hit Joelinton’s hand, but it wasn’t intentional.

His arm was in a natural position, not fully by his side but not extended unnaturally either.

He was in close quarters with Bergvall and couldn’t avoid the contact.”

Pearce added: “Gordon’s finish was excellent, leaving the goalkeeper Austin with no chance.

Tottenham were trying to play out from the back quickly, but they got caught, and the ball ended up in the net.”

The goal marked Gordon’s fifth Premier League strike this season and his fifth goal contribution in as many league games.

It was scored in front of newly appointed England manager Thomas Tuchel, adding further significance to the moment.
