Led by iconic players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, this team, known as the Dream Team, left an indelible mark on Olympic basketball.
After a disappointing performance at the 1988 Olympics, the US Basketball team aimed to assert NBA dominance by assembling a star-studded roster for the Barcelona Games. Comprising luminaries such as Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, and Patrick Ewing, alongside Jordan, Johnson, and Bird, the Dream Team roster boasted unparalleled talent.
Under the guidance of coach Chuck Daly, the Dream Team dominated every opponent they faced, with their closest victory being a 32-point margin in the gold medal game against Croatia. They started their Olympic campaign with a resounding 116-48 win over Angola and continued their dominance, averaging a staggering 43.8 points per game margin of victory throughout the tournament.
The Dream Team’s lineup was so formidable that there was no fixed starting five, with Daly rotating players like Pippen, Mullin, Robinson, and Malone alongside regular starters Jordan and Johnson. In the gold medal game against Croatia, the starting lineup featured Jordan, Johnson, Barkley, Malone, and Ewing, securing a convincing 117-85 victory.
