Premier League-winning hero criticizes ‘fearful’ Leicester City and questions transfers

With seven consecutive defeats, even the most hopeful Leicester City supporters are finding it difficult to believe their team can stage one of the Premier League’s most remarkable survival comebacks.

Leicester legend Marc Albrighton has echoed the concerns of many critics, admitting that the situation “is not looking great.”

The club’s former Premier League winner revealed that he is struggling to see a way out of their poor run of form.

Reflecting on the squad’s lack of reinforcements, he even admitted to being naive for believing at the start of the season that they could avoid relegation.

Currently sitting in 19th place, Leicester are nine points adrift of safety following their latest defeat to Manchester United, which marked their 13th loss in 14 matches.

With just nine games remaining, manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has vowed to keep fighting until the very end.

The Dutchman insisted: “It’s about the mathematical possibility that is there. As long as that exists, we are professionals and will keep doing our jobs.

We can’t and won’t give up until it’s mathematically impossible.”

However, Albrighton, who played a key role in some of Leicester’s most successful seasons, is far less optimistic.

When asked if their fate could be sealed before their upcoming matches against Wolves and Southampton, he conceded: “Yeah, it’s not looking great.

The performance today [Sunday] and in recent weeks suggests they’re not going to improve. These next games are against top sides, and they look very difficult.”

Now working as a pundit, Albrighton believes Leicester’s current squad lacks the confidence to impose themselves in matches, making life too easy for their opponents.

He elaborated: “Nobody wants to be the one to give the ball away, so they play the safe pass. Defensively, they’re scared to commit and put in a tackle.

Players are standing off their attackers, allowing them free shots, and that’s exactly where the goal came from [on Sunday].”

Although he was optimistic at the beginning of the season, Albrighton now believes Leicester’s failure to make performance-changing transfers has sealed their fate.

He argued that the club’s signings have made little to no impact, stating: “They’re either sitting on the bench or watching the game from home.”

He also pointed to the departure of Enzo Maresca as a turning point, suggesting the team never truly recovered from his exit.

The shift from Maresca’s short-passing, high-possession philosophy to Steve Cooper’s more direct approach has left the squad struggling to establish a clear identity on the pitch.

Following Leicester’s latest defeat, former Manchester United defender Phil Jones agreed with Albrighton’s assessment. He added: “It’s not quite worked.

As Mark said, I don’t think they’ve strengthened enough, and some of the lads look completely drained of confidence.”

Looking ahead to their upcoming fixtures, Jones admitted the challenge seems nearly insurmountable.

“The run of games they have coming up makes it look almost impossible.

Stranger things have happened, but it’s looking increasingly unlikely that they’ll get themselves out of the bottom three.”
